The Arizona radio and TV stations photos from the John in Montana collection are listed in alphabetical order by call letters.

KAET-DT: This KAET-DT Phoenix screen shot is from 2008. KAET Channel 8 came on the air in 1961. It is operated by the Arizona State University. KAET-DT came on the air in 2001. KBAQ FM 89.5 audio is broadcast on KAET-DT 8-4. K-Bach airs classical music.

KAFF: KAFF Radio 930 Flagstaff came on the air in 1963. Their FM on 92.9 ceme on the air in 1982 as KFLG and changed to KAFF-FM in 1986.

Studios are located at 1117 West Route 66 as seen in these photos from 2008

Note the Route 66 sign below the KAFF sign. With the slogan "Calf Country" you just know their format is country music.

The KAFF Radio 930 tower is located at the end of West Kristy Lane just north of Route 66 as seen in this photo from 2008.


KASA: KASA Radio 1540 Phoenix broadcasts a Christian radio format from their West Baseline Road studios shown in this photo from 2009. The KASA call letters are derived from the Spanish word for house, "casa." They are owned by Kasa Radio Hogar, Inc. The three tower array is located next to the studios. Photos are from 2009.

KASW: These two KASW-Digital 6.1 Phoenix screen shots are from 2009.
KASW started out as K61CA in 1983. The KASW call letter were taken in 1995. Branding as the WB61 until becoming CW, now known as The CW6.
Studios are located with KTVK as seen below.

KAZM: KAZM Radio 780 Sedona came on the air in 1982. This station offers a wide variety of music and entertainment from "Coast To Coast AM" to the Wolfman Jack show.

Studios and tower are located at 3400 West Highway 89A in Sedona. The tower is next to their building as seen in these photos from 2008.

A friendly welcome mat is at the entrance door.

The next photo, also from 2008, is of one of the KAZM control rooms.
The station is quite community oriented.

KBLU: KBLU Radio 1320 and TV Channel 13 Yuma studios as seen in 1965. Channel 13 is now KSWT-TV. The KBLU call letters are now on 560 in Yuma. 1320 is now KAWC, a station for the Arizona Western College.

KBXZ: KBXZ Radio 1650 Flagstaff, Arizona is a low powered station broadcasting sports to Flagstaff. This photo from 2008 shows the studios at 1016 West University Avenue. Note the antenna on the roof. That's what they broadcast from. On air ID's mention they have less power than a bread maker.

KCEE: KCEE Radio licensed to Cortaro had been on 1030 and used these towers broadcasting to the greater Tucson market. The four towers are located just north of West Massingale Road near I-10 as seen in this 2009 photo.

In July of 2009 KCEE 1030 swapped formats and call letters with KVOI 690. The four tower array pictured is now being used by KVOI 1030. 690 started out as KEVT in 1953, changed to KVOI in 1981, and now KCEE.
KCEE 690 tower is located about 2550 North Los Altos Avenue in Tucson as seen in this photo from 2010.

The studios for KCEE 690, KVOI 1030, and KGMS 940 (see tower photos below) are located at 3222 South Richey Avenue in Tucson.

KCFG-TV: KCFG-TV Channel 9 Flagstaff operates out of a mini mall along Route 66 at 2634 North Steves Boulevard as seen in these two photos from 2008.

KCFG-TV broadcasts programs from the America One network. They came on the air in 2000.


KCUB: Citadel Broadcasting in Tucson is the home of KCUB 1290; KTUC 1400; KHYT FM 107.5 "Tucson's Classic Hits;" KIIM FM 99.5 "Country Favorites;" and KSZR FM 97.5 "Bob FM."


There is a billboard sized sign at the entrance as well as a sign in front of the building.

The studios as well as the tower used by both KCUB 1290 and KTUC 1400 are located at 575 West Roger Road.

Citadel has quite a few vehicles used by the stations as seen in these photos from 2010.
The blue van is used by KCUB 1290.



The black van is used by KTUC 1400.



KIIM uses this truck as well as an impressive RV


The van with the 97.5 BOB FM graphic is used by KSZR.

KDUS: KDUS Radio 1060 "The Fan" has a long history in Phoenix area broadcasting. Most of you will remember them as KUPD "Cupid" in the 1960's and 1970's with their top 40 rock format. Going through different formats and call letter changes from the 1980's to the mid 1990's, R&B as KKKQ, country as KUKQ, and then sports as KDUS.

The three tower array is located next to the studios and can be seen along I-10 not far south of Baseline Road.

John is pictured in front of the studios at 1900 West Carmen Street on a warm January day.


KFFN: KFFN Radio 1490 Tucson came on the air as KAIR in 1957. "Drive with KAIR, everywhere."
They changed call letters to KJYK in 1990 and aired a hip-hop music format. Then call letters were changed to KNND, "The End," and now "The Fan" as KFFN. KFFN offers a sports format with ESPN Radio and Arizona Diamondbacks games. The studios are located at 3438 North Country Club Road and the tower is located down North Country Club Road at East Grant Road as seen in these photos from 2010.

KFNN: 1510 Mesa started out as KNTS in 1984. In 1986 the calls were changed to KJAA. In 1988 they became KFNN and serves the Phoenix market with a business format.
Studios are located near downtown Phoenix at 4800 North Central Avenue as seen in these photos from 2010.

KFNX: The photos of the KFNX Radio 1100 studios at 2001 North 3rd Street in Phoenix are from 2008.
KFNX came on the air in 1991 as KCCF. The change to KFNX was made in 1998.
They are licensed to Cave Creek, Arizona and air mostly paid health and financial programs. They also air programs featuring Don Imus, Dr. Laura, Bill O'Reilly, Lou Dobbs, and Jerry Doyle.
KFYI: Radio 550 Phoenix for years was knwon as KOY. The KFYI call letters had been on 910 until 1985 when the calls were moved to 550.

The tower is located about 6505 South 36th Street behind the Phoenix Desert Nursery on East Southern Avenue as seen in these photos from 2010.

KGME: Radio 910 in Phoenix started out as KPHO on 1230 in 1940, they moved to 910 in 1941. Calls were changed to KJJJ in 1971 and in 1986 they became KFYI which is now on 550 (see above).
KGME is branded as "XTRA Sports 910" and broadcasts a sports talk format.

KGMS: KGMS Radio 940 Tucson broadcasts a Christian talk format and is owned by Good News Communications.

The two tower array is located just south of West Starr Pass Boulevard along West San Juan Trail as seen in these photos from 2010.


KGUN TV: Channel 9 Tucson came on the air in 1956 as KDWI-TV which was named for D. W. Ingram the owner.

Ingram sold the station to H. U. Garrett in 1957 and the call letters were changed to KGUN-TV. The station was sold a few more times, and is currently owned by Journal Broadcast Group.
Studios are located at 7289 East Rosewood Street as seen in these photos from 2010.

In addition to KGUN-TV, this is the location for KWBA TV, a CW affiliate; KFNN 1400; KGMG 106.3; KMXZ 94.9; and KQTH 104.1.

The screen grabs are from 2010. The "On Your Side" is the station's current slogan. Former station slogans include "In Touch with Tucson" and "Clear, Accurate, To the Point."

Note the logos for the Journal Broadcast Group stations.

Former CNN news anchor Lou Waters, who started his TV career in Tucson at KVOA-TV, is a news anchor with KWBA-TV.

KHEP: The two photos of radio station KHEP 1280 transmitter building and tower at 3948 North 38th Avenue in Phoenix are from 2008.

This station changed call letters to KTKP in 1999 and then to KXEG in 2001. They air Christian music and programming along with their sister station KXXT Radio 1010. See below for photos of their tower.

KIDR: KIDR Radio 740 Phoenix has a Spanish news talk format. They are owned by Multicultural Broadcasting.

The two tower array is located just south of West Baseline Road at South 23rd Avenue and West Dobbins Road as seen in these photos from 2010.

KIHP: KIHP Radio 1310 Mesa became part of the Immaculate Heart Radio family on December 17, 2009. 1310 was formerly KXAM.

The two tower array is located in the Mesa Cemetery as seen in these photos from 2010.

There is easy access to these towers from North Country Club Drive at the West 13th Place entrance to the Mesa Cemetery.

The next two photos, also from 2010, show the KIHP transmitter building and a billboard from Christmas of 2009 that was still in place in 2010.

KINO: KINO Radio 1230 studios and tower are located on Easy Street in Winslow as seen in these photos from 2008. This is in a subdivision filled with upscale homes.

Winslow is the home to the famed "Standing On The Corner" tourist attraction. You'll find a photo of John In Montana standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona elsewhere on this website.
KJACK: Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff operates the unlicensed student operated radio station KJACK. Broadcasting on 1680 and other means throughout the campus. Their slogan is "Your New Music Axcess."

The station depends on student volunteers to provide programming and operate the facility as part of the NAU School of Communications.

The first photo from 2008 shows the Communications building on the campus in Flagstaff.

The next three photos show the main control room.
You can even find NAU's K-Jack being streamed on the internet and received on a cell phone as seen in this photo.

In the last photo we find John talking to K-Jack Program Director Veronica Figueroa. Veronica is also a DJ using the name Figgz.

KJLL: KJLL Radio 1330 has studios at 4431 East Broadway Boulevard, Tucson as seen in this photo from 2010.

KMIA: KMIA Radio 710 Black Canyon City came on the air in 1981 as KUET. They changed to KMIA in 2003. They broadcast ESPN Deportes Radio sports format to the greater Phoenix market. This traveling billboard was spotted in 2009.
KMIK: 1580 has seen numerous call letter changes over the years. I first remember listening to them as KYND ("kind"). Buck Owens once owned the station. KYND changed to KTUF. KTUF changed to KNIX. Then to KCWW. Now as KMIK they are a Radio Disney format station.
Their 6 tower array is located just south of the 202 along North Center Street. The two photos are from 2009. Note the tagging on the tower ID sign.
KMSB-TV: Channel 11 Tucson came on the air in 1967 as KZAZ changing to KMSB-TV in 1986. Starting out as an independent, now a Fox affiliate.
KTTU-TV Channel 18, My Tucson TV, is also located in the KMSB-TV building as seen in these photos from 2009. Studios are located at 1855 North 6th Avenue. Channel 18 came on the air in 1984 as KDTU and changed to KTTU-TV in 1989. Formerly UPN, now MyNetworkTV.
KNAZ-TV: KNAZ-TV Channel 2 Flagstaff came on the air in 1970 as KOAI-TV. Call letters were changed to KNAZ-TV in 1981. Those call letters had been in Prescott, that station is now KAZT-TV. The station became a satellite operation of KPNX Channel 12 Phoenix on August 15, 2008.
The two photos from 2008 show the 2201 North Vickey Street location in Flagstaff looking almost abandoned.
KNIX-FM: 102.5 FM in Phoenix started out in 1965 as a beautiful music station. In 1968 country singer Buck Owens purchased the station and in 1998 Clear Channel purchased the FM from Owens. KNIX FM has a country music format.
These two photos show the KNIX remote truck set up at the Home and Garden Show at the Arizona State Fairgrounds in January 2010.
KNST: Radio 790 came on the air in 1963. Call letters ranged from KCEE to KWFM to KNST, all of which appeared on other frequencies in Tucson over the years. Now as KNST they provide a talk format for the Tucson market. They are a Clear Channel owned station. The two tower photos are from 2009. The KNST 790 3 tower array is located behind an Ace Hardware store on West Grant Road.
KNXV-TV: KNXV-TV Channel 15 Phoenix came on the air in 1979 as an independent station with overnight ON-TV subscription programming. Later they were Fox, and then in 1994 with the massive affiliate switch in the Phoenix market they became the ABC affiliate. Their studios are located at 515 North 44th Street in Phoenix as seen in these photos from 2009.
KOLD-TV: Channel 13 Tucson came on the air in 1953 as Tucson's first TV station with the call letters KOPO-TV.
Known as Lucky 13, they even selected 1:13:13 PM on the 13th of January to sign on the air.
The Singing Cowboy, Gene Autry owned the station.

The call letters were changed to KOLD-TV in 1957.

The studios are located at 7831 North Business Park Drive in Tucson as seen in these photos from 2009.

They use KOLD 13.2 for continious weather information.

KOOL: KOOL FM 94.5 in Phoenix came on the air in 1956. In addition to KOOL FM, KMLE FM 107.9 shares studios at 840 North Central Avenue as seen in this photo from 2010.
KOY: Radio 1230 Phoenix has seen numerous call letters from KRIZ to KFLR, then KAJM, KPMX, KISP, KYOT, KISO, and then KOY which had been on 550 in Phoenix for a number of years. The studios are located at 4686 East Van Buren Street in the Clear Channel building that is also the home to KEZ-FM, KNIX, KYOT, KISS, KFYI, and KMXP. This photo is from 2009.
KPAZ-TV: KPAZ TV Channel 21 came on the air in 1967 as the first UHF station in Arizona. Their first studio location was in the old Tower Plaza Mall.
The station went dark in 1977 due to debt.
The license was transfered to Trinity Broadcasting Network, Inc.

Now on Digital channel 20, branding continues as Channel 21.

KPHO-TV: KPHO-TV Channel 5 Phoenix came on the air in 1949 as Arizona's first TV station. The call letters come from PHOenix.

The studios are just off I-17 south of West Indian School Road at 4016 North Black Canyon Highway.

The first photo, from 2008, shows the sign at the entrance to the parking lot.

KPHX: 1480 Phoenix started out as KHAT in the 1950's and changed to KPHX in the early 1970's.
"The Lounge Sound" format plays music from Frank, Dean, Ella, and Sammy.
The two photos of their 824 East Washington Street studios are from 2009.

KPKX: FM 98.7 Phoenix was originally KBBC with an easy listening formet.
Then as KKLT in 1982 they were known as "K-Lite."
In 2004 they changed to KPKX with an adult hits format and branded "The Peak."
These photos of their remote van are from 2010. The first is of the van in a parking lot. Next we have a live remote at the Home and Garden Show at the Arizona State Fairgrounds. Studios are located with KTAR (see below).
KPNX-TV: Channel 12 Phoenix came on the air in 1953 as KTYL-TV.
In 1955 the call letters changed to KVAR and then in 1959 to KTAR-TV.
In 1979 the call letters were changed to KPNX-TV.
The studios are at 1101 North Central Avenue as seen in these photos from 2009 and 2010.
KPNX-TV has always been an NBC affiliate.

KPNX is actually licensed to Mesa and their legal ID's show KPNX Mesa/Phoenix.

Digital 12.1 is KPNX and 12.2 features the AccuWeather Channel.

KSAZ-TV: Channel 10 Phoenix came on the air in 1953 as KOOL-TV.

In 1982 the call letters were changed to KTSP-TV. Then in 1994 they became KSAZ-TV.

Starting out as an ABC affiliate, they became CBS in 1955. Then with the massive affiliate switch in Phoenix in December of 1994 they became Fox.

The studios are located at 511 West Adams Street as seen in these photos from 2009.

KSUN: Radio 1400 Phoenix at one time was co-owned by actor Dick Van Dyke. 1400 has seen various call letter changes including KNOI and KXIV and KSUN.
Their tower is located south of East Southern Avenue at South 40th Street behind a Walgreens Drug as seen in these photos from 2010.

KSZR-FM: KSZR-FM 97.5 Tucson - Bob FM started out in 1991 as KVNM. In 1992 they became KRKN, then in 1994 KCDI. 1996 brought KTSS which changed to KSJM later in the year. From 1998 until 2003 they were KOAZ. Now KSZR.

The 97.5 Bob FM van photo is from 2010. Their tower is located on Walker Road just west of I-10 as seen in this photo from 2009.
KTAR: Arizona's first radio station was 620 Phoenix.
They came on the air in 1922 as KFAD.
The station was purchased by The Arizona Republic in 1929 and they changed call letters to KREP. Then in 1930 the calls were changed to KTAR.
Keep Talking the Arizona Republic. The studios for KTAR 620; KTAR-FM 92.3; and KPKX 98.7 "The Peak" had been located at 5300 North Central Avenue as seen in these station photos from 2010.

Studios are now located at 7740 North 16th Street in the Squaw Peak Corporate Center as seen in these photos from 2010.

KTAR 620 broadcasts from a two tower array in the 3700 block of East Thomas Road.
I'm sure this area of Phoenix was way out of town in 1922, but today the area is filled with houses and businesses. In fact, one of the towers is located in the parking lot of a Wal-Mart store.

The other tower is behind the Home Depot store next to Wal-Mart.

Note the warning signs on the cinder block fence at the base of the tower in the Wal-Mart parking lot.

KTAZ: KTAZ TV 39 Phoenix is owned and operated by NBC Telemundo. This on air ID is from 2010.

KTBA: KTBA Radio 760 Tuba City broadcasts programs in Navajo and Hopi languages as part of the Western Indian Ministries.

KTBA studios are located at on Arizona Boulevard in Tuba City as seen in these photos from 2008

KTKT: KTKT Tucson came on the air December 13, 1949 on 1490 changing to 990 in the mid 1950's. Art Linkletter was one of the original owners. This station was a highly rated top 40 rock station during the 1960s.

The potos of their studios located at 3871 North Commerce Drive are from 2009. Other Arizona Lotus Corporation stations, KPPX-FM, KFMA-FM, and KCMT-FM are also located in this building. The photo of their four tower array located at the end of West Copper Street is also from 2009.

KTVK: KTVK Channel 3 Phoenix came on the air in 1955 as an ABC network affiliate.
Their studios at 5555 North 7th Avenue house KTVK as well as KASW CW6. These photos are from 2010.

KUAZ: KUAZ 1550 Tucson simulcasts KUAZ-FM. The call letters stand for K-University-of-AriZona. The tower is located just north of West Wasson Avenue as seen in this photo from 2009.
KVNA: KVNA Radio 600 Flagstaff came on the air in 1958 on 1290, switched to 690, then to 600. The station started out as KEOS changing to KZKZ in 1981. The change to KVNA took place in 1986.

The offices are located at 1800 South Milton Road in a mini-mall as seen in these photos from 2008. The station is operated from the KYBC facility in Cottonwood.
KVOA-TV: KVOA-TV Channel 4 came on the air in 1953 as Tucson's second TV station. The call letters stand for Voice Of Arizona. Studios are located at 209 West Elm Street as seen in these photos from 2009.
Many will remember the "Eyewitness News" slogan used for many years. That was changed to "Where The News Comes First" and then to "Coverage You Can Count On." In 2007 the current slogan, "Balanced News You Can Count On" became their slogan.
In April of 2007 KVOA-TV became the second station in Arizona to do High Definition newscasts. The newsset is pictured.

KWFM: KWFM Radio 1450 Tucson came on the air in 1947.
Their tower is located east of the South Kino Parkway at East 28th Street and South Cherry Avenue as seen in this photo from 2010.

KXXT: Radio 1010 Tolleson came on the air in 2001 as KXEM. In 2004 the call letters were changed to KXXT. They broadcast from a two tower array located south of West Van Buren Street at South 67th Avenue as seen in this photo from 2010.
KYBC: Radio 1600 Cottonwood started out at KVIO. They changed to KVRD in 1979, and then in 1996 to KYBC reflecting the ownership Yavapai Broadcasting Corporation.

The photos are from 2008. The tower is located behind the former East Highway 89-A studio location.

Now located at 3409 East Highway 89-A, Yavapai Broadcasting Corporation operates KYBC as well as KVNA Radio 600 Flagstaff; KKLD FM 95.9 "The Cloud" Cottonwood; KQST FM 102.9 "Q102.9" Sedona; KVNA FM 100.1 "Sunny FM" Flagstaff; and KVRD-FM 105.7 FM Cottonwood from this facility.

A central equipment rack location houses control equipment such as EAS and computer automation CPUs.


Production and live trucks are housed in a large garage in the back of the building. Here is one of the production trucks.
