North Dakota Radio and TV Station Photos from the John in Montana Collection

The North Dakota radio and TV stations photos from the John in Montana collection are listed in alphabetical order by call letters.

KBMR: We start with KBMR Radio 1130 Bismarck. This photo is of their 3500 East Rosser Avenue location as it looked in 1989. Today this location is also the home to KFYR AM and KYYY FM, both formerly downtown, and KXMR.

KBMY-TV: KBMY-TV Channel 17 began broadcasting in 1985, just four years before this photo was taken of their location at the top of a bank building. They now are located at 3130 East Broadway Avenue. Historians will recall the KBMY call letters were originally on radio station KBMY 1240 in Billings, Montana. Standing for Billings - Montana - Yellowstone (county).

KFYR: The photo of the KFYR Radio 550 Bismarck 4th and Broadway Avenue studio location is from 1989. They are now located with other stations at 3500 East Rosser Avenue. KFYR 550 came on the air in 1925. Known as "kay-fire," they can be heard in five states and two Canadian provinces giving it the largest coverage area of any AM station during daytime hours.

KFYR-TV: Our next photo is from 1989 and shows how the KFYR TV Channel 5 Bismarck downtown studio location at 200 North 4th looked at that time. KFYR-TV came on the air in 1953 as the second TV station in North Dakota and the first for Bismarck.

KXMB-TV: The KXMB TV Channel 12 Bismarck photo is from 1989. KXMB-TV studios, transmitter, and tower are located here. They came on the air in 1955 as KBMB-TV and changed to KXMB-TV in 1960. They use the slogan "KX Television" and are part of the network of North Dakota stations including KXMA-TV Channel 2 in Dickinson and KXMC-TV in Minot. The stations are all CBS TV network affiliates.
