Washington Radio and TV Station Photos from the John in Montana Collection

The Washington radio and TV stations photos from the John in Montana collection are listed in alphabetical order by call letters.

KAYU-TV: The 2008 station photo for KAYU TV Channel 28 Spokane is of their 4600 South Regal Street location. KAYU-TV came on the air in 1982. Fox28 newscasts are produced by KHQ-TV.

KBES: This photo of the KBES Radio 1540 studios is from 1974. This station is now KXPA.

KBKW: This KBKW Radio 1450 Aberdeen studio photo of their 1520 Simpson Avenue location is from 2007. KBKW was started in 1949 by Ben K. Weatherwax - (K)BKW.

KBSN: The two photos for KBSN Radio 1470 Moses Lake are from 2008. The first is of their 2241 Main Street studios and the second of their towers as seen from I-90. The towers are on a small island in Moses Lake.

KCFA: The KCFA Radio 1330 Spokane station photo is of their 5408 South Freya Street location as it looked in 1974. Now KMBI, the studios are still located here. The building looks the same, the trees have grown around the area. Large KMBI lettering is now seen above the overhang above the door. KCFA came on the air in 1959. The station was purchased by the Moody Bible Institute in 1974 and changed the call letters to KMBI. Below you will find this building as it looked in 2009 as KMBI.
KCPQ-TV: The on air graphic for Q13 is from 2008. Channel 13 serves Seattle, but is licensed to Tacoma. Coming on the air in 1953 as KMO-TV, the station changed to KTVW, now KCPQ.

KELA: The KELA 1470 Centralia 2008 photo is of their studios and tower located at 1635 South Gold Street.
KEZE: The photo of the KEZE Radio 1380 Spokane 6019 South Crestline Street studios and tower is from 1974. Starting out as KPEG in 1957 when they featured an all female announcer staff. In 1970 the call letters were changed to KEZE.

KFMY: The four photos for KFMY Radio FM 97.7 are from 2007. The studios at 1803 State Avenue NE are pictured first. This is the home to KFMY as well as KAYO FM 99.3. This building is an addition to an old house and the employee entrance to The Eagle studios is the old front door of the house as seen in the next picture. Numerous KFMY and KAYO logos are seen on the various vehicle photos. The red truck sports an Eagle 97.7 FM logo on each side. The black PT Cruiser also has Eagle logos. The white van has both Eagle 97.7 FM and KAYO logos. These stations are part of the South Sound Broadcasting company.

KGA: This KGA Radio 1510 Spokane station and tower photo is from 1974. The old 63rd and Regal location is now filled with housing. KGA started in 1927. They have retained the same set of call letters over all of their on air time.
KGA's studios at 1601 East 57th Avenue share the building with Mapleton Communication's KBBD FM "Bob FM" 103.9; KDRK FM "The Cat" 93.7; KEYF 1050; KEYF-FM 101.1; KJRB 790; and KZBD FM "The Peak" 105.7 as seen in this photo from 2009.

KGHO: The KGHO Radio 1560 studio and transmitter building and tower photo is from 1973. This facility was located at the end of 31st Street in Hoquiam. That area in front of the station to Aberdeen Avenue is now a school bus storage facility.
The next photo, from 2009, shows that the building and tower still exist, however the bulding shows age.
KGHO is now KWOK, however the KGHO signage remains as seen in this photo from 2009. The building is used for the KWOK transmitter.
Looking west from Myrtle Street, you will notice more school buses surrounding the site. The tower being used by KWOK. This photo is from 2009.

KGY: The KGY Radio 1240 Olympia station and tower photo is from 2007. KGY is one of the oldest radio stations in the northwest coming on the air in 1922. The studios are located on the waterfront as seen in these photos.
The next photo shows a closer look at the KGY building as seen in 2007.

KHHO: The KHHO Radio 850 Tacoma 6 tower array is located on River Road East behind the River Lake RV Park. This is near where I-5 goes over the Puyallup River. The green building seen in the middle of the towers houses the transmitter. This photo is from 2009.
KHQ: KHQ Radio 590 Spokane had remote studios at the Expo '74 World's Fair. This photo was taken while attending Expo '74. KHQ started out in Seattle in 1922 but was moved in 1925 to Spokane. In 1985 the call letters were changed to KLSN, 1986 to KAQQ, and in 2002 to KQNT.

KHQ-TV: KHQ-TV Channel 6 Spokane, Q-6, studios were located at 4202 South Regal Street until their move to the new downtown studios. This photo is from 1974 of how the station looked at that time. Note the "Q-6" sign on top of the building. The building is still there, but is now used as a school. KHQ-TV came on the air in 1952 as an ABC affiliate until 1954.

The on air ID is from 1978.
The next two photos from 2006 are of the new studios at 1201 West Sprague Avenue in downtown Spokane. Note the "Q-6" sign that was moved from the old building.

The on air screen shot from 2006 shows weekend anchor Ana Cabrera and Spokane's favorite weekend weatherman, Jeff Womack.
KIRO-TV: The two photos for KIRO-TV channel 7 Seattle show the studios at 2807 Third Avenue in downtown Seattle. The first one is from 1974 and the second from 2005. About the only change is in the signage above the doorway. KIRO-TV came on the air in 1956.

KIRO Radio 710 is also located in the building. KIRO Radio came on the air in 1927 as KPCB, in 1935 the change was made to KIRO. Their move to 710 was in 1937.
KITI: KITI Radio 1420 Centralia came on the air in 1977. These photos from 2009 show their 1133 Kresky Avenue location.


KJAQ: The photo of the KJAQ FM 96.5 Seattle van is from 2009.

Now known as KJQN "Jack FM" the station has seen numerous call letter changes since starting in 1959 as KLSN. Call letters were changed to KYAC, KYYX, KKMI, KQKT, KXRX, KYCW, KYPT, and KRQI before becoming KJQN.

KJRB: KJRB Radio 790 Spokane came on the air in 1947 as KNEW. The change to KJRB was in 1966. The photo of the studios and towers is from 1974.
KKSN: The next photo is of the KKSN Radio 910 Vancouver tower site across the river in Portland, Oregon. This 2008 photo is of their towers at the corner of NE Airport Way and NE 158th Avenue.

KICK: The photo for KICK Radio 1400 and KYYT FM 102.3 Goldendale studios from 2008 is of their 620 East 3rd Street, The Dalles, Oregon location.
KLOG: The KLOG Radio 1490 photo is of their studios at 506 West Cowlitz Way as seen in 2008. This building is also the studios for KUKN FM 105.5 "Cookin' Country" Longview.

KMAS: The next photo is of the KMAS Radio 1030 210 West Cota Street studios in Shelton from 2008.
KMBI: The KMBI Radio 1330 Spokane station photos are of their 5408 South Freya Street location as it looked in 2009.
Coming on the air as KCFA in 1959, the station was purchased by the Moody Bible Institute in 1974 and changed the call letters to KMBI. Above under KCFA you will see how the building looked in 1974.
KO-AM TV: While this station only broadcasts over Comcast channel 257 in the Seattle area, they do provide an extensive broadcast schedule 24/4 to the Korean community. The only KOrean-AMerican television station in Washington. Broadcasts include a 10 PM newscast. The photos, from 2009, are of their 32008 32nd Avenue South location. They have been in this building since March of 2008.
KOMO-TV: The KOMO-TV channel 4 KOMO Radio 1000 station photo is from 2005. Their building isn't hard to find, it's across from the Seattle Space Needle at 140 Fourth Avenue North in downtown Seattle. KOMO-TV Channel 4 came on the air in 1953. They were an NBC affiliate until 1959. KOMO Radio 1000 came on the air as KGFA 980 in 1926. The photo of the KOMO-TV Channel 4 Seattle satellite live truck is from 2005.
KPQ: Heading to apple country, the photo of the KPQ Radio 560 Wenatchee studios at 231 North Wenatchee Avenue is from 2007. KPQ came on the air in 1928. Note the use of the apple shapes on their building sign.

KREM-TV: KREM-TV Channel 4 Spokane came on the air in 1954 as an ABC affiliate. They changed to CBS in 1976. The first photo is of the 4103 South Regal Street studios as they looked in 1974.


The on air ID for KREM-TV is from 1975.

The next photo is of how the KREM-TV 4103 South Regal Street location looked in 2008. Those pine trees sure have grown.
The two on air frame grabs are from 2009. The first is of a combo station ID / news tease and the other from a PSA for Spokefest including the KREM logo

The towers behind KREM-TV on Regal had been used by KREM-TV when they came on the air, and KREM Radio 970 which is now KTTO. This 2008 photo was taken from the Shopko parking lot just south of the site. KREM Radio 970 came on the air in 1947. The call letters were changed to KZZU in 1985, KHIT in 1987, KTRW in 1988, and then to KTTO in 2005.


KRXY: KRXY FM "Roxy 94.5" studios are located at 2124 Pacific Avenue SE as seen in this photo from 2009.
KSPO-FM: The 6019 South Crestline Street station location in Spokane has a rich history in broadcasting. Currently the building houses KSPO-FM 106.5 (licensed to Dishman) and KTRW 630, however it once was the studio location for KEYF and KUDY.
The tower seen in the photos from 2009 has been used by KPEG/KEZE 1380 in the past.
This area of Spokane has been developed into housing since the early days of KPEG. Note the photo above for KEZE showing the 6019 South Crestline Street address as it looked in 1974.

KSPS-TV: KSPS-TV Channel 7 the PBS affiliate in Spokane, came on the air in 1967. The two photos are of their 3911 South Regal Street location.
One is from 1974.
The the other is from 2008. The building has been added onto over the years.

KUDY: The KUDY Radio 1280 Spokane station and towers photo is from 1974. This is how the building and towers looked in 1974.

The next three photos are from 2009 showing an addition onto the building. While the call letters are now KPTQ, the signage still shows the KUDY call letters on the 5100 block of the South Palouse Highway. KUDY came on the air in 1964. They changed to KAQQ in 2002 and to KPTQ in 2005.

In addition to KPTQ (formerly KUDY) 1280, the building is the location for the transmitter for KEYF 1050 (Dishman). The other signage mentions KCDA "Mix 103.1" FM and KKZX 98.9 FM.

KWIQ-FM: KWIQ FM 100.3 Moses Lake started out as KFMT in 1978 and changed to KWIQ in 1980. The tower can easily be seen along I-90 as seen in this photo from 2009.
KWYZ: The Radio Hankook studios at 807 S. 336th Street in Federal Way photos are from 2009.
Operating two stations, KWYZ 1230 Everett and KSHU 1450 Puyallup, they broadcast a mix of Korean language programming to the Seattle area.
KWYZ 1230 signed on in 1957 at KQTY and changed to KWYZ in 1962. 1230 Puyallup came on the air in 1951 as KAYE and has seen numerous call letter changes over the years including KUPY, KJUN, KKBY, and in 1997 to KSUH.
KXLE: The next photo is from 2008 and is of the KXLE Radio 1240 and KXLE FM 95.3 studios and tower at 1311 Vantage Highway in Ellensburg.

KXLY: The photo of the two towers is from 2009. One of the towers is for KXLY Radio 970 and the other is used by KXLX Radio 700 and KTRW Radio 630. The towers are just south of the athletic park at South Regal Street and East 46th Avenue in Spokane.
KXLY-TV: The KXLY-TV Channel 4 on air ID is from 1978.

KXRO: The KXRO Radio 1320 Aberdeen photo of their 1308 Coolidge Road studios and KXRO tower is from 2004. This building is also the home for KWOK Radio 1490, KXXK Radio 95.3 FM, and KDUX Radio 104.7 FM.

KXXK: KXXK Radio FM Hoquiam, Kix 95.3, offeded a Kix County Chicken Fried Steak Dinner at the Lighthouse Cafe in 2009.

KXXO: The next two photos from 2007 are of the KXXO Radio 96.1 FM Olympia studios at 119 NE Washington Street.
The neon tower sign is fun to watch as rings light up from the tower center. Known as the Rockway-Leland Building, KGY Radio was located here from 1941 until they moved to their waterfront location in 1960.
KZNW: KZNW Radio 1340 Wenatchee came on the air in 1993 as KWWX. They changed the call letters to KZNW not long before this 2007 station photo was taken. This 231 North Wenatchee Avenue location is also the home to KAAP FM 99.5 "The Apple" as well as KWWW "KW3" as well as KZPH Rock 106.7 and KYSN FM 97.7. The 2007 photo of the building sign lists each station located in the building.

The van photo from 2007 displays logos for each of the stations. The Super Z (KZNW) and KW3 (KWWW) logos are easily seen.

Our final Washington picture is of the KZNW Radio 1340 tower located at the end of Brenner Lane in East Wenatchee.
