Wyoming Radio and TV Station Photos from the John in Montana Collection

The Wyoming radio and TV stations photos from the John in Montana collection are listed in alphabetical order by call letters.

KASL: The KASL Radio 1240 Newcastle photo is from 1973. This is their old downtown West Main location in the Masonic Building.

KBBS: The KBBS Radio 1450 Buffalo tower photo is from 1971. The tower is located along I-25. KBBS came on the air in the late 1950s.

KCWY-TV: KCWY-TV Channel 14 Casper downtown studios in 1980.

KEVA: The KEVA Radio 1240 station photo is from 1970. This building has long since been torn down and KEVA is now located on Airport Road. KEVA came on the air in 1953.

KJWY-TV: The KJWY-TV Channel 2 Jackson photo of their 970 West Broadway location is from 2008. Perhaps the staff does their laundry downstairs. KJWY-TV is the lowest powered full service television station in the United States running only 178 watts. While this station is a satellite of KPVI-TV Channel 6 Pocatello, Idaho, they air newscasts from co-owned KCWY-TV Casper, Wyoming.

KMMZ: The KMMZ Radio 1140 Greybull studio and tower photo is from 1980. This is their location on Highways 16 and 20 between Greybull and Basin. They are now KZMQ. The KMMZ call letters are now in Midland, Texas on 101.3.

KMTN: The KMTN FM 96.9 Jackson photo is from 2008. This is of their location at the corner of Highways 22 and 89.

KOJO: The first KOJO Radio 1490 Laramie station photo is of their old downtown location taken in 1971. In 1972 they moved to a new building. This photo from 1972. Note they moved the sign from downtown to this building. It wasn't too many weeks later that the building blew up. DJ Alan Boeker was on the air when natural gas filled the building due to an error in installing a furnace. Just about to talk on the air, the power went out and Alan ended up in the middle of a mess. The entire building collapsed around him. 1490 Laramie started out as KLME. 1490 was moved to Green River in 1976 as KUGR.

KOWB: The KOWB Radio 1290 Laramie station and towers photo of their 3525 Soldier Springs Road location is from 1972. KOWB, the King Of Wyoming Broadcasting had been owned by famed sports broadcaster Curt Gowdy from 1966 until 1992. Curt was born in Green River, Wyoming in 1919 and died in 2006.

KROE: KROE Radio 930 Sheridan came on the air March 18, 1961 as the second radio station in Sheridan. KROE ran a series of ads promoting their new station. You will find a couple of those ads on this page. The first studios were located at 47 South Scott Street in Sheridan. When KWYO 1410 moved from their 21 North Main Street location a couple of years later, KROE moved into those studios. The first KROE photo is of that Main Street location. The sign was moved from the Scott and Works location. The CBS mention on the sign in this photo from 1971 was not part of the original sign. That sign got moved again to the trailer house studios next to thir tower on the old dump road which was later renamed Kroe Lane. The photos of the trailer and tower are from 1974. The station has since built a different building. The call letters, KROE, are pronounced "crow" and the first slogan used by the station was "Something to KROE (crow) about."

KRTR: The station photo for KRTR Radio 1490 Thermopolis is from 1980. This facility is no longer on the air. The mention of KWRB-TV on the sign was in reference to the remote studios of then channel 10 Riverton.

KTWO: The billboard for KTWO Radio 1030 Casper is from 1970. No, that's not a billboard on a frozen planet in far outer space, that's Wyoming folks.

The KTWO-TV Channel 2 station and tower photo is from 1971. They were located at 143 North Durbin in downtown Casper when they started in 1957, but moved to this 4200 East Second Street in the early 1960's. This had been way out of the city, but the city grew to them. In fact, this is a hot shopping area for Casper including the Eastridge Mall about a block away.

Here are three on air ID's from KTWO-TV. The "First In Central Wyoming" ID is from early 1961. This ID was seen quite often.
The one with the TV camera is also from 1961, later in the year. Note the use of the lighter "TV" in the KTWO lettering. The "V" being formed from part of the "W."

The next on air ID is from 1969. By this time they were using the "K2" branding more often.

KTWO has since moved to 1896 Skyview Drive.

KVWO: The KVWO Radio 1370 Cheyenne tower and studio photo is from 1971. This facility is silent. The KVWO call letters were moved to 650 in 1978.

KWYO: KWYO Radio Sheridan came on the air on July 9, 1934 on 1370 as Sheridan's first radio station. They moved to 1410 in 1941. The station photo from 1971 is of their 140 East Loucks location. They had moved from 21 North Main Street (which became the 2nd location for KROE 930) in 1961. The Loucks location was also the Clouds Peak Cable TV headend for a number of years. The cable operation remains in this building, now owned by Bresnan.

Our final Wyoming photo is of the wonderful old tower used by KWYO Sheridan, Wyoming from when they came on the air until they increased power to 5,000 watts and constructed a new tower next to Highway 14. Sadly, this tower was then dismantled (By N. A. Nelson Construction) and sold for scrap in August of 1977. Houses now fill this area of the Dana Hill.
